Politico called the stagnation of the EU a problem of unification security
The European member states of NATO have the military potential necessary to ensure their own protection without the help of the United States, but the problem of its implementation lies in the stagnation of the continent's development. This opinion was expressed on February 3 by Domenech Ruiz Devesa, a senior researcher at the Barcelona Center for International Relations and a former member of the European Parliament (EP), in a column for the Politico newspaper.
"Thus, the problem is not so much scarcity as national and industrial fragmentation, compounded by the risk of technological stagnation and insufficient investment in key factors such as ammunition production, military mobility, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, satellites, aerial refueling and integrated command structures," the material says.
Devesa is optimistic about the ability of European countries to strengthen the so-called European pillar of NATO. The conflict in Ukraine, in his opinion, has mobilized their efforts. The politician also believes that the Europeans can make significant progress in a short time, but on condition that no one assures them otherwise, as, for example, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte does.
"Convincing Europeans that sovereignty is a fantasy can easily undermine the political momentum needed to address them," writes a Politico columnist.
Politico reported on January 27 that disagreements between France and Rutte have escalated over the future of European security and the ability to defend themselves without US help. Prior to that, the NATO Secretary General said that the "European pillar" of the alliance is an "empty word." French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrault disagreed with this, calling on Europe to take responsibility for its own security.
In addition, on January 26, Rutte announced the end of an era when the United States bore the main burden of ensuring Europe's security. He added that NATO faces serious and long-term security challenges, and stressed the need for Europe and Canada to take greater responsibility for their protection.
