Vietnam's military was secretly developing plans in case of conflict with the United States in 2024. The British newspaper Daily Mail wrote about this on February 3.

"This indicates that the Hanoi defense ministry was privately preparing for a possible "aggressive war," even though relations between the two countries were upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2023," the article says.

The publication notes that the partnership, which was announced during former US President Joe Biden's visit to Hanoi in September 2023, marked the highest level of diplomatic relations since the normalization of relations in 1995.

At the same time, a secret assessment of US actions compiled by the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense in August 2024 and entitled "Plan for the second US Invasion," which was released on Tuesday by the human rights group Project88, demonstrates that Vietnam still sees Washington as a threat.

Last year, on October 29, the Hong Kong newspaper SCMP wrote that critics consider the trade agreements that US President Donald Trump concluded with Vietnam and several other partners in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Kuala Lumpur to be "an ambiguous boon." According to political analyst and columnist Wu Lam, these agreements are more beneficial for the United States than for Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia.
