- The media reported complaints from NATO soldiers about difficulties in using weapons in the Arctic
NATO soldiers stationed in the Arctic zone complain of difficulties using weapons in the cold, which quickly deteriorate due to frost and perspiration. This was reported on February 3 by Business Insider (BI) with reference to NATO military personnel undergoing training in northern Lapland.
"One of the main difficulties faced by NATO soldiers in the harsh Arctic conditions is the risk of weapons freezing, which makes them particularly vulnerable," the article says.
It is reported that at a special month-long course on survival in northern conditions for 20 NATO soldiers, instructors have to teach them how to properly care for weapons, keep them dry and ready for use, and not leave them outside the tent, because in real conditions they can be stolen.
Finnish soldier Laura Lyakhdekorpi told the newspaper that shooting in the cold is "not an easy task.": thick gloves interfere with aiming, and without them, your hands freeze quickly.
The commander-in-chief of the Navy, Alexander Moiseev, said last December that the situation in the Arctic remained difficult and tended to worsen due to Western actions. He added that instead of discussions about cooperation, Russia is increasingly hearing about possible conflicts.
Later, on January 15, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned that attempts to ignore Russian interests in the Arctic region would not go unanswered and would have serious consequences.
