The length of service earned before 2002 is of particular importance for calculating future pensions due to differences in pension legislation of the past and present. Irina Shatskaya, Head of the Department of Economics at RTU MIREA, told about this on February 3.

According to the expert, the modern insurance system, which has been in operation since 2002, is based on personal pension points from employer contributions. There were no such savings for earlier periods, so the state created a special mechanism to protect citizens' pension rights.

"Labor activity in the Soviet and early post-Soviet times is converted, that is, it is converted into estimated pension capital. This takes into account not only the years of work, but also other socially significant periods according to the norms of that time. For example, military service or child care," Shatskaya explained to the Prime agency.

The economist noted that the length of service before 2002 was overestimated as part of the valorization procedure in 2010. The estimated pension capital increased by 10%, to which 1% was added for each full year of service before 1991.

"Any inaccuracy or unaccounted-for period in the workbook leads to the irretrievable loss of not only the length of service itself, but also the substantial increase due for it. A few years before retirement, you must request a detailed statement from the Social Fund and verify all work periods with the available documents. If gaps are found, you can request supporting certificates and documents from the relevant institutions," Shatskaya added.

Earlier, on February 1, it was reported that Russian citizens with long-term work experience, industrial workers with harmful and dangerous working conditions, as well as mothers with many children can expect early retirement. Special rules are provided for the northern length of service — women with 20 years of preferential service can retire earlier, men with 25 years.

Employees in conditions with harmful and dangerous conditions can retire prematurely if they have at least 10 years of work in such conditions and the corresponding total length of service. Mothers with many children with 15 years of insurance experience can apply for a pension earlier than the established age, depending on the number of children.
