Italian President Mattarella called for a truce during the Olympics
Italian President Sergio Mattarella has called for a truce during the 2026 Olympic Games (OI — 2026) in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. His words were quoted by ANSA on February 3.
"We are asking with stubborn determination to observe the Olympic Truce everywhere. Let the unarmed force of sport silence the guns," Mattarella urged.
According to him, the Olympic Games are a global event that stands against violence and wars.
Luciano Buonfillo, President of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), also recalled the ancient tradition of the Olympic Truce, which "demanded postponing conflicts."
