- Lavrov pointed to the lack of connection between the Russian Federation and the tension around Greenland.
Russia assumes that the tension around Greenland is not related to its activities. This was announced on February 2 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"We are closely monitoring this serious geopolitical situation. We will draw conclusions, including on changing the balance of power in the Arctic and possible response measures on our part, based on the results of the resolution of this problem," he is quoted as saying on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The Foreign Ministry drew attention to the "selectivity and inconsistency of Western approaches to the principles of territorial integrity and the right of nations to self-determination." As an example, Lavrov pointed to opposing assessments of the situation around Greenland and the events of 2014 in Crimea, when Western countries supported the right of Greenlanders to self-determination, but rejected the similar right of Crimeans.
"The situation around the northern Danish autonomy very clearly indicates the failure of the "rules—based world order", which is so dear to many in the West," the ministry said.
The response also expressed concern about the militarization of the Arctic and its transformation into a zone of geopolitical confrontation, which is associated with the actions of NATO.
"Our country will continue to firmly defend its positions in the region in order to ensure its sustainable socio-economic development, preserve the natural environment, cultural heritage and traditional way of life of indigenous peoples. We will continue our policy of strengthening national sovereignty in the Arctic zone," Lavrov concluded.
On January 25, Reuters reported that the United States had not abandoned plans for a military takeover of Greenland. Trump and representatives of his administration doubled down on the possibility of using force, and such statements caused confusion and alarm in Washington and among US allies, the media reported.
On January 22, US President Donald Trump announced that he was ready to cooperate with NATO on Greenland's security issues. He added that after the negotiations held at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Greenland deal would give Washington greater authority on the island.
