Russia will provide support to Cuba amid the worsening relations between Havana and Washington. This was stated on February 2 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a conversation with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez.

"During the conversation, priority issues of bilateral cooperation and the international agenda were discussed. <...> Firm readiness was expressed to continue providing Cuba with the necessary political and material support," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.

It is noted that Lavrov also called unacceptable economic and military pressure on Cuba, especially the blockade of energy supplies to the island. The minister warned that this could lead to a deterioration of the energy situation in Cuba.

The foreign ministers of the two countries also discussed the schedule of upcoming Russian-Cuban contacts.
