Every year on February 4, the world celebrates World Cancer Day. The purpose of this day is to draw attention to the problem of oncological diseases, the importance of their prevention and early detection. In 2026, it falls on Wednesday. Izvestia tells about the history, traditions of the holiday and what events are dedicated to this date this year.

The History of World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day was established in 2005. The initiative was launched by the International Cancer Control Union with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO). The main task of this day is not only to inform about cancer prevention measures and treatment methods, but also to combat false myths and fears that often accompany this diagnosis.

The need for such work is obvious. According to WHO, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death. Every year, doctors identify millions of new cases. At the same time, experts believe that 30 to 50% of cancers could be avoided by completely eliminating or reducing the impact of key risk factors such as air pollution, alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, and lack of physical activity.

Most often, a malignant tumor, which is caused by damage to the genetic material (mutation) of cells, affects the mammary glands, lungs, intestines and skin. However, the main danger lies in the fact that these cells can freely travel through the body along with the flow of blood or lymph, destroying healthy tissues and spreading to other organs.

This process is called metastasis. Most often, it is metastases that lead to severe consequences and death. To date, there is no way to fully guarantee protection against cancer. But modern medicine does not stand still either. New drugs and technologies are constantly emerging that increase the effectiveness of the fight against the disease.

Today, cancer is not always a verdict. If the disease is detected at an early stage and proper treatment is started immediately, then it can be completely cured. In some cases, the development of the disease can be stopped for many years. Therefore, timely diagnosis and access to quality medical care play a key role in increasing the chances of a successful treatment outcome.

The theme of World Cancer Day in 2026

Since 2008, every World Cancer Day has been held under a specific motto, which sets the vector of the information campaign for one to three years. This tradition allows us to focus on the most relevant aspects of medicine in the field of cancer treatment and prevention.

For example, in previous periods, attention was paid to creating a healthy environment for children and youth free from tobacco smoke, debunking dangerous misconceptions about cancer that interfere with their prevention and treatment, and calling for personal commitment in the fight against cancer.

The theme for 2025-2027 is "Uniting for the sake of the unique." The campaign focuses on the importance of an individual approach to each patient. The most important thing in it is the promotion of the idea that every person is unique and medical care should be provided taking into account the social aspects of his life and psychological characteristics, and not just diseases.

World Cancer Day — events in Russia and the world

Traditionally, on February 4, scientific and practical conferences for doctors, public lectures by leading oncologists, and open days in clinics with the possibility of free screening are held worldwide. Charity events, sports races and concerts have become widespread on World Cancer Day, the proceeds of which are used to help cancer patients and support research.

These initiatives bring together the efforts of the State, the medical community and civil society. Their common goal is to contribute to reducing cancer morbidity and mortality by increasing public literacy and access to medical care. Similar events will take place in 2026.

In Russia, a Week of cancer prevention announced by the Ministry of Health is timed to coincide with World Cancer Day. In 2026, it will be held from February 2 to February 8. The program includes educational campaigns, including the distribution of information materials, the opportunity to undergo free examinations in medical institutions, and the operation of a hotline where you can get answers to questions from specialists.

Earlier, Izvestia reported on World Tuberculosis Day, which is celebrated annually at the end of March.
