The United States is strengthening its air defense systems, which provide protection for American military bases in the Middle East, as it fears that Iran could launch a large-scale retaliatory strike. This was reported on February 1 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources.

"The Pentagon is deploying an additional Thaad battery and the Patriot air defense system at bases where American troops are stationed throughout the Middle East," the material says.

The first type of weapon, as specified in the text, is used to intercept ballistic missiles above the Earth's atmosphere, and the second — to protect against threats of shorter range and lower altitude.

It is emphasized that the process of strengthening air defense systems is fixed at facilities located in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The relevant information, as specified, was provided to the publication by unnamed military officials, who in the conversation referred to flight tracking data and satellite images.

The head of the White House, Donald Trump, announced a day earlier that he would not disclose his plans for Iran, and then, a little later, said that Tehran was in serious talks with Washington. The next day, he expressed hope for reaching an agreement with Iran, emphasizing the presence of the "most powerful ships" of the United States near its shores.

On February 1, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ali Khamenei, said that a new American aggression aimed at his state could lead to a regional conflict. He added that his state does not start wars with anyone, but in case of an attack it is ready to give a powerful rebuff.
