On the eve of the day of the defeat of the Nazi German troops by Soviet troops in the Battle of Stalingrad, road signs with the name "Volgograd" are being changed to signs with the historical name "Stalingrad" at the main entrances to the hero city. The February 1 footage is published by Izvestia.

It is specified that after a day the signs will be returned to their previous form. Signs of special regulations 5.23.1 "The beginning of the settlement" and 5.24.1 "The end of the settlement" with the name "Stalingrad" will be installed at the entrances to the city along the federal highways Syzran — Saratov — Volgograd (Shurukhina St.), Volgograd — Kamensk-Shakhtinsky (Nezhdanova St.), R-22 "Kaspiy" (Historical St.), along the regional highway R-221 (General Romanenko St.).

The work on the replacement of information signs will be carried out by municipal road enterprises. Every year, in memory of Volgograd's heroic past, the name Stalingrad returns to him nine times a year: February 2, February 23, May 8 and 9, June 22, August 23, September 3, November 19 and December 9.

On September 18 last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the issue of the possible return of the name Stalingrad to Volgograd should be decided by local residents.

On April 29, Putin signed a decree naming Volgograd airport Stalingrad. The next day, the head of state noted that there was logic in changing the name of the city itself. If we de-ideologize Stalingrad, then the concept will be associated with the victory in the Great Patriotic War (WWII), Putin said.
