Germany's underground gas storage facilities are currently less than 34% full — such figures have not been observed since the "crisis" year for the country in 2022, when gas supplies from the Russian Federation stopped. This was reported by the Bild newspaper on January 31.

"Gas reserves in Germany were empty this weekend by less than 34%, which has not been the case for many years. <...> The last time gas storage facilities were as empty as they are now, in the crisis year of 2022, after the cessation of Russian gas supplies due to the conflict in Ukraine," the publication says..

The storages began to spend their reserves especially diligently, as specified in the publication. Currently, Germany is in particular need of this, as there is "no end in sight" to the snow and icing. Berlin was particularly affected by the snowy winter.

It is noted that in order to avoid gas shortages that may occur in the winter of 2027, Germany will need to accumulate 50% more resources in the summer than it did last year.

A day earlier, the Berliner Zeitung (BZ) newspaper expressed outrage at Germany's shipment of two combined thermal power plants to Ukraine. It was noted that these installations were required by the Germans themselves, who are currently experiencing power outages.

On January 26, Alice Weidel, co-chair of the German Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, called her state's green policy unworkable and expressed doubt about its effectiveness. According to the politician, it is impossible to manage an industrial country with the help of wind and solar, when previously all this was offset by the import of cheap Russian gas.
