- The media reported on the free distribution of potatoes in Berlin due to the record harvest
In Berlin, potatoes are being distributed for free in kindergartens, schools, churches and non-profit organizations after the biggest harvest in the last 25 years. This was reported by The Guardian on January 31.
The situation with an overabundance of vegetable crops has already been called the "potato flood". Appeals have been sent out all over Berlin to the public to come to various places and pick up potatoes for free.
"Soup kitchens for the homeless, kindergartens, schools, churches and non—profit organizations are just some of those who have eaten their fill. Even the Berlin Zoo took part in the "rescue operation," taking tons of potatoes that would otherwise have gone to landfill. <...> Two trucks with potatoes were sent to Ukraine," the article says.
Many recipes are being distributed online, as those who have harvested potatoes are trying to figure out what to do with its excess.
In October last year, it was reported that Moldovan farmers were throwing away their apple crops. It is noted that this has been happening for several years. Local farmers cite high fuel prices as the reason, as well as the inability to transport products to the territory of the Russian Federation without intermediaries.
