Germany has abandoned the idea of boycotting the 2026 FIFA World Cup
On January 31, the German Football Union clarified its position on a possible boycott of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The information was posted on the organization's website.
"We believe in the unifying power of football and the global impact that the World Cup can have. Our goal is to use and strengthen the positive force of football, not to hinder it," the DFB said in a statement.
The issue was discussed at a meeting of the DFB Board of Directors. Following the meeting, it was decided not to support the idea of a boycott. The union stressed that they consider the World Cup as an instrument of unification.
On January 28, The Washington Post (WP) reported an increase in calls for a boycott of the FIFA World Cup due to US policy. Among the reasons for such measures are the actions of US President Donald Trump in relation to Venezuela and Greenland, as well as concerns about the events in Minneapolis.
