The NYT stated that the dominance of drones threatens the superiority of tanks
The United States continues to introduce the latest tanks, but experts are wondering whether these combat vehicles will be relevant in the era of cheap and efficient drones, The New York Times reported.
"Tanks have been the main predators of ground warfare for generations. Until a few years ago, no major army seriously considered the possibility of how swarms of low-cost amateur drones could disrupt these plans. Now everyone is thinking about it," the publication says.
According to the newspaper, the Ukrainian conflict provoked an arms race using drones, as a result, some of the most modern battle tanks in the world became their victims.
"Tanks wishing to survive are often forced to hide many kilometers from the front line to avoid a similar fate," writes The New York Times.
The newspaper pointed out that the United States is responding by rapidly expanding its own drone fleets.
"The situation has changed. Now we have high-precision target acquisition at very low cost. The tank is being destroyed not by a multimillion—dollar missile, but by swarms of drones worth thousands of dollars," said retired US Army Lieutenant General David Barno.
Unless tank designers find a way to counter this new threat, even the most advanced tanks may prove to be of little use, the article claims.
Uraldronzavod announced on January 26 that the Russian military had begun using new UAVs (UAVs) with increased payload "Upyr-18" in the Kupyansky and Konstantinovsky areas of the special military operation (SVO). These drones can be used to supply fighters on the front line.
