The media reported a low level of American support for US attempts to buy Greenland
The level of American support for US President Donald Trump's policy towards Greenland remains low. This was reported on January 14 by the Reuters news agency, citing an Ipsos survey.
According to the results of a two-day survey that took into account the opinions of more than 1,000 U.S. residents, only 17% of Americans support Trump's attempts to buy Greenland. About 47% of respondents expressed disapproval, while 35% said they could not decide on an answer. At the same time, support for this initiative is significantly higher among Republicans (40%) than among Democrats (7%).
The overwhelming majority of respondents do not believe that the seizure of Greenland by military force is advisable. Of these, 71% expressed their negative attitude, while 25% refrained from responding. Only 4% of respondents supported the annexation of the Danish island, among whom there are almost no Democrats.
More than half (66%) of Americans fear that Trump's initiatives could harm relations with NATO partner countries. Approximately one in five respondents stated that they had not heard anything about plans to acquire Greenland.
Danish radio Danmarks Radio (DR) reported on the same day that Denmark had begun the transfer of military equipment and advanced units to Greenland. To this, Trump said that the kingdom should "immediately get out" of the island with its "dog sleds."
NBC reported that the United States could pay up to $700 billion for the purchase of Greenland if the American leader can reach an appropriate deal. This amount includes the allocation of more than half of the annual budget of the United States Department of War for national security.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on January 13 that the island's residents want to stay with Denmark. According to him, the island was never sold and did not want to join the United States. Later, Trump said that Nielsen was in trouble because of his words about his desire to remain part of Denmark.
