- The American Conservative pointed out that it is beneficial for the United States to maintain the START Treaty with Russia
The Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START Treaty) concluded by Moscow and Washington plays an important role for the United States and its national security. This was reported by The American Conservative magazine on Friday, January 30.
The agreement will expire, as noted, next Thursday, February 5. If there is no renegotiation of the agreements, the American side will face multiple risks.
"Strategic stability with Russia, the country with the largest nuclear arsenal, is too important for the United States and its national security," the text says.
The START Treaty was signed in 2011. According to the treaty, Russia and the United States bilaterally had to adhere to reducing the arsenals of deployed strategic nuclear weapons. According to the document, representatives of the actors could visit the nuclear facilities of the parties for the purpose of mutual supervision of armaments.
On September 22, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that his state was ready to continue to adhere to the agreement for another year after the START Treaty expired. Later, the head of the White House, Donald Trump, called the Russian leader's idea of a treaty "good."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 29 this year that Moscow was waiting for a response from Washington on the START Treaty. He added that the Kremlin's position on this issue is "well known."
