- The virologist pointed out the danger of treating the Coxsackie virus with antibiotics
Taking antibiotics for enterovirus infections, which also include the Coxsackie virus, can harm the patient, worsening his condition. This was announced on Saturday, January 31, by Galina Companets, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Fundamental Medicine at the School of Medicine and Life Sciences of the Far Eastern Federal University.
"In no case (to treat the Coxsackie virus. — Ed.) not with antibiotics. <...> This can make it worse, because viral infections cannot be treated with antibiotics, they only worsen the condition," she said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The expert clarified that the Coxsackie virus usually resolves on its own, without treatment. In medical practice, as she explained, there is even such a thing as a "three—day fever", which speaks for itself - the person who suffers it has a high fever, which disappears after three days.
Companets agreed that the symptoms of this disease can look scary, as it can cause blisters on the skin and mucous membranes. However, these formations, as she emphasized, should not be processed in any way. The only thing the doctor recommended was to bring down the temperature if it was approaching high levels.
A day earlier, Companets listed the dangerous symptoms of enterovirus in children, which, if detected, should be consulted by a doctor. She attributed incessant vomiting, headache and loose stools to such signs. The specialist urged parents to monitor minors and, in case of deterioration of their condition, seek medical help.
