Bali court sentences Ukrainian woman to 20 years in prison for drug smuggling
The District Court of Denpasar, Bali, sentenced a Ukrainian citizen to 20 years in prison for smuggling drugs weighing more than five kilograms. This was reported on January 30 by The Jakarta Post newspaper, citing a statement by Judge Ni Kadek Kusuma Vardani.
"The court hereby sentences the defendant to 20 years in prison and a fine of 1 million rupees (US$59.56. — Ed.), which, in case of non—payment, will be replaced by an additional 190 days in prison," the statement said.
It is specified that the sentence exceeded the requirement of the prosecutor's office, which insisted on 12 years in prison and became the maximum within the framework of the charges. The defendant has seven days to decide whether to appeal.
The Reuters news agency reported on January 30 that Serbian law enforcement authorities seized 5 tons of marijuana and five weapons as part of a raid on a small agricultural company in a village in central Serbia. It was clarified that two people were also arrested during the raid, but one suspect is still at large.
