More than 200 people died in the collapse of a coltan mine in the DRC
More than 200 miners mining coltan ore in the Rubaya mine, which is located in the eastern territory of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), were killed when structures collapsed. This was reported on January 30 by the Reuters news agency with reference to the local governor of Lubumba, Kamber Muyisa.
"This week (from January 25 to January 31. More than 200 people died as a result of the collapse of the Koltan Rubai mine," the statement said.
It is noted that the mine produced about 15% of the world's reserves of columbite-tantalite, which produces heat-resistant materials widely used in the creation of mobile phones and computers.
According to the head of the region, the death toll from the landslide included not only men, but also women and minors involved in the mines.
On December 21, 2025, the Xinhua news agency reported that five people were killed as a result of a water break that was recorded at a coal mine located in the Chinese province of Heilongjiang bordering the Russian Federation. Local government officials said that the workers were trapped underground as a result of the incident.
