The State Duma deputy explained the UN statement on Crimea and Donbas
Alexei Chepa, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said that the West uses double and even triple standards in its policy, they do not live by international rules.
"For some, the memorandum is in effect, and when they were afraid of Trump, they began to play back, but for Crimea it was kind of unacceptable. It's just ridiculous. Europe has reached the abyss. And this speaks to the weakness, the collapse of the European Union and the general decay of such a policy, which today they are trying to promote and call democracy," Chepa said in an interview with Lenta.Ru on Friday, January 30th.
On January 30, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the statement by United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres about the inapplicability of the principle of self-determination of the peoples of Crimea and Donbass, unlike Greenland, deeply erroneous.
On January 29, Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced that the right of peoples to self-determination allegedly does not apply to Crimea and Donbas. According to him, this is the conclusion reached by the United Nations (UN) Secretariat.
At the same time, Russia appealed to the UN with a request for recognition of the right of the peoples of the new regions to self-determination after the organization recognized the right of the inhabitants of Greenland to decide on belonging to a particular country. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also expressed doubt about the impartiality of the organization's leadership, claiming that it supports those forces that seek to preserve the "Nazi regime" in Ukraine.
In December, Sergey Lavrov said that Crimea and the new regions are an integral part of the Russian Federation. At the same time, he stressed that Moscow's goal is not to expand territories.
