- Reuters has learned about China's approval of Deepseek's purchase of Nvidia H200 chips
China has allowed artificial intelligence (AI) developer Deepseek to purchase Nvidia H200 chips, despite the fact that a number of regulatory conditions for their use are still under development. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on January 30.
According to the sources of the publication, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Commerce approved applications for the purchase of chips by an AI developer, but stipulated that additional conditions for their use would be put forward later due to the fact that they are under development.
According to the agency, these conditions are determined by China's state planning authority, the National Development and Reform Commission. The H200 chip, Nvidia's second-most powerful artificial intelligence chip, has become one of the main stumbling blocks in U.S.-China relations.
Despite strong demand from Chinese companies and the approval of exports from the United States, Beijing's reluctance to allow imports has become a major obstacle to supply.
On December 30 last year, Reuters reported that the Chinese authorities had introduced a mandatory requirement for 50% use of domestic equipment by chip manufacturers. It was clarified that this rule is not documented, but in recent months, the authorities have informed chip manufacturers that they must prove during tenders that at least half of their equipment will be manufactured in China.
