- The Foreign Ministry pointed to the UN's bias due to Guterres' words about Crimea and Donbas
The words of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres about the non-application of the principle of self-determination for Crimea and Donbass speak about the bias of the organization's secretariat and its structures. This was announced on January 30 by Dmitry Lyubinsky, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
"This does not fit into any simple framework and indicates the bias of the UN Secretariat," TASS quoted him as saying.
In addition, he called Guterres' statement a "blatant statement."
The day before, Guterres said that the principle of self-determination of peoples allegedly does not apply to Crimea and Donbass, unlike Greenland. He noted that this conclusion was reached after careful consideration of the situation in the Office of Legal Affairs.
On January 29, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that Russia had asked the United Nations to recognize the right of the peoples of the new regions to self-determination. The Minister recalled that the West, declaring the right to self-determination in the context of Kosovo's independence, did not demand referendums, but only declared the region's independence.
