The remains found on a beach in Florida, after years of examination, were identified as belonging to 19-year-old Jacob Lyon, who went missing in 2015. This was reported on January 28 by the Daily Mail newspaper with reference to the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

"This is not the result our community was hoping for. We hope there will be peace for his family now that Jacob has been found," the sheriff's office said.

According to the newspaper, the remains were found in October 2022 by a random passerby during the clearing of the territory. For two years, medical experts tried to identify the deceased, after which, at the end of 2024, the samples were sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for complex DNA analysis.

The sheriff's department explained that such an examination takes a long time due to the degradation of the material, environmental influences and the limited amount of genetic material.

Jacob's mother Judith reported his disappearance in February 2016, having not seen her son for three months. It is reported that the young man suffered from a mental disorder and was forcibly placed in a psychiatric clinic in October 2015. The cause of his death remains unclear.

The Daily Mail reported on January 23 that in the northern part of Helsinki, police found an 80-year-old man who, according to preliminary data, could have lived for several decades in a basement without windows, toilets, cooking and hygiene. The police launched an investigation to determine how many years the man had spent in the basement and whether there had been any criminal offenses, including unlawful imprisonment or ill-treatment.
