Lavrov spoke about Trump's reaction to Putin's story about the Russian ban in Ukraine
US President Donald Trump was surprised by Russian leader Vladimir Putin's story about the ban on all Russian in Ukraine. This was announced on January 29 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"When we were in Alaska, when <...> Putin and <...> Trump sat down for talks and the topic somehow came up on the rights of Russians, which were totally banned in Ukraine. President Putin mentioned that not only is the Russian language banned, but the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church has also been banned. <...> Trump didn't believe it," he said.
At the same time, the US president asked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio several times whether such laws really apply in Ukraine.
Lavrov noted that the Ukrainian regime, in fact, has become a "pawn" in the hands of the West and the Patriarch of Constantinople, and this process began with the support of the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden. He added that now Western countries are not trying to stop interfering in the church affairs of Ukraine.
The Minister also noted that Ukraine continues to violate the rights of national minorities, including in the field of language and religion. He stressed that the Constitution of Ukraine still contains a requirement to ensure the rights of all national minorities, which is not being implemented by the Ukrainian regime. According to Lavrov, unlike other countries, Russia is actively raising these issues, including with the participation of its BRICS and SCO partners.
At the same time, Lavrov called the US presidential administration an exception. He noted that after several months she had developed a "28-point plan" that clearly demanded the restoration of the rights of national minorities, including their linguistic and religious rights.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on December 3 last year that Russia would carefully study the final text of the document of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, which excludes Russian from the list of languages subject to protection. She also noted that despite the efforts of the Ukrainian government to ban and persecute the Russian language, residents of the state do not want to give up their native language and continue to use it, despite all restrictions and penalties.
