Lavrov called Ukraine a pawn in the West's geopolitical game against Russia
Ukraine has become a "pawn" in the geopolitical game of the West, which uses the country to create a threat to the security of the Russian Federation. This was stated on January 29 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an interview with the Turkish media.
According to Lavrov, Russia views the Ukrainian conflict as a broad clash between Russia and the West, since Ukraine is a "pawn" used by Europe to threaten Russia's security at the border.
"We know that this work was carried out immediately after Ukraine became independent. It was being prepared to join NATO. Although it is well known that Ukraine's independence was recognized primarily on the basis of the Declaration of Independence. It clearly proclaimed a policy of non—alignment with military blocs, neutrality and renunciation of nuclear weapons," he said.
As Lavrov emphasized, back in 2004, the West demanded a "third" round of voting, since a Western protege could not win the election.
"We are talking about a geopolitical project that the West has undertaken many times over the long centuries of history in order to weaken and destroy our country," Lavrov said.
In addition, he said that the regime of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, which destroyed all monuments commemorating the joint victory in the Great Patriotic War, reflects the true intentions of the West.
Vladislav Maslennikov, director of the Department of European Affairs at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on January 29 that the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) was actually preparing for a possible conflict with Russia. According to him, in the current NATO doctrinal documents, Russia is designated as "the most significant and direct threat to security," and this status remains in the long term, even in the event of a resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.
The Russian Foreign Minister also said on January 20 that NATO and the European Union (EU) are experiencing a profound crisis, and the OSCE is "breathing hard."
