- The political scientist called Trump's idea of joining Greenland a long-term calculation.
The intention of the American leader Donald Trump to annex Greenland to the United States is designed for the long term, both in matters of national security and in relation to possible mining. Yulia Boguslavskaya, a senior lecturer at the Department of American Studies at the Faculty of International Relations of St. Petersburg State University, Candidate of Political Sciences, shared this belief with Izvestia on January 29.
"Trump says that in the long term, Greenland's importance will increase, and it is necessary that the United States protect the island. That Washington will do it better and more effectively if Greenland becomes part of a sovereign territory," she said.
According to Boguslavskaya, in this way Washington wants to get guarantees that no one will interfere in its activities on the island and the facilities located on it.
The political scientist added that the Trump administration does not focus on mining — it is obvious that it is now unprofitable. However, against the background of global warming, such a scenario cannot be ruled out, she stressed.
In turn, Vladimir Vasiliev, chief researcher at the Institute of the USA and Canada, noted that resources whose extraction is not relevant today may be in demand in the future, and Washington is determined to stock up on this potential for the future.
"The United States thinks that in the long term — after some period of time, maybe even measured in decades - the Arctic will become a very important area or a zone of conflict of various kinds of interests," he concluded.
On January 25, Reuters reported that the United States had not abandoned plans for a military takeover of Greenland. Trump and representatives of his administration have doubled down on the possibility of using force, and such statements have caused confusion and alarm in Washington and among US allies, the media reported.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, in an interview with The New York Times on January 27, reported that Copenhagen does not rule out a possible revision of the 1951 defense agreement with Washington, according to which the United States could build its military bases on the island. She added that the events of the past few weeks, during which talk about Trump's desire to conquer the Danish semi-autonomous unit escalated, demonstrated the disappearance of the old world order.
On January 28, Bild reported that Denmark had sent the Ocean Endeavour cruise ship to the shores of Greenland to accommodate soldiers on it. It was clarified that the vessel was leased in order to avoid additional burden on hotels in Nuuk.
