The LDPR Party has sent a letter to Rosreestr and the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) with a proposal to return the historical name of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago — the Land of Emperor Nicholas II. The party's leader Leonid Slutsky informed Izvestia about this on January 30.

"The initiative concerns the restoration of the original names of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, discovered in 1913-1914 by a hydrographic expedition led by Boris Vilkitsky. Historically, the archipelago was called the "Land of Emperor Nicholas II", and the largest islands were named after Tsarevich Alexei and a member of the expedition L. M. Starokadomsky. In 1926-1932, these names were replaced," the letter says.

According to Slutsky, the initiative corresponds to the instruction of Russian President Vladimir Putin, given in 2018 at a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Geographical Society, on the preparation of a new atlas of the world with the restoration of historical Russian names of geographical objects.

Russian President Vladimir Putin noted on September 18 last year that the issue of the possible return of the name Stalingrad to Volgograd should be decided by local residents, and it is possible to consider this issue. Prior to that, on July 5, Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov said he was insisting that the name Stalingrad be returned to Volgograd. According to Zyuganov, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation is preparing an appropriate decision on this issue.
