Rospotrebnadzor reported no cases of infection with the Nipah virus in Russia
There has not been a single imported case of the Nipah virus in Russia, which was recorded in India. This was announced on January 29 by the press service of Rospotrebnadzor.
"Rospotrebnadzor informs that no imported cases of the disease caused by the Nipah virus have been registered in the territory of the Russian Federation. The Perimeter AIS operates at checkpoints across the state border, the system allows real—time identification of citizens with signs of infectious diseases and prevents further spread of diseases in the country," the agency's website says.
Rospotrebnadzor points out that in Russia there are many test systems for timely laboratory diagnosis of the virus. According to the agency, there is no necessary combination of environmental and epidemiological conditions for the widespread spread of Nipah in the Russian Federation.
"The main vectors of the virus, fruit bats of the genus Pteropus— live mainly in tropical and subtropical regions and are not widespread in Russia," the report says.
For citizens planning trips to endemic regions, Rospotrebnadzor has published recommendations including hygiene, avoiding contact with sick animals and eating unwashed fruits. The situation remains under the department's control.
On January 27, the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated a low risk of further spread of the Nipah virus, but stressed that due to insufficient knowledge of the virus, there is a possibility of other outbreaks. WHO spokesman Tarik Zhazarevich said that Nipah has a mortality rate of 40 to 75%, depending on the strain of the virus and the level of medical care.
To prevent infection, the organization recommends boiling date palm juice, thoroughly washing and peeling fruits before use, and discarding fruits with signs of bat bites.
