On January 29, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke out against mediation in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

"Negotiations are primarily necessary between Ukraine and Russia. We (Germany — Ed.) do not act as intermediaries here," Die Zeit newspaper quoted him as saying.
