- The Russian Foreign Ministry pointed to NATO's preparations for a conflict with Russia
The North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) is actually preparing for a possible conflict with Russia, Vladislav Maslennikov, director of the Department of European Problems at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on January 29.
According to him, in the current NATO doctrinal documents, Russia is designated as "the most significant and direct threat to security," and this status remains in the long term, even in the event of a resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.
"Based on this, NATO is actually preparing for a possible conflict with Russia, increasing military spending, increasing its capabilities along the perimeter of our borders and deploying new missions and operations in eastern Europe," Maslennikov said in an interview with TASS.
According to him, NATO has cut off all contacts with Russia, and Moscow has only an emergency communication channel.
On January 16, former Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Jens Stoltenberg called on Western countries to engage in dialogue with Russia. He noted that even during the Cold War, countries managed to limit the use of nuclear weapons.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on January 20 that NATO and the European Union (EU) were experiencing a profound crisis, while the OSCE was "breathing hard." After the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO, the EU and the OSCE, according to him, began to be used to introduce Russia's traditional influence into regions, including the South Caucasus, Central Asia and the Far East.
