Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU) before January 1, 2027 is impossible, since all states wishing to become EU members must meet the Copenhagen criteria. This was announced on January 28 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"We also brought to the attention of the American side that Ukraine's entry on January 1, 2027 is excluded — it is impossible," he said after consulting with the leaders of the SPD and the Christian Social Union (CSU).
