On January 28, on Holocaust Memorial Day, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Russia's Chief Rabbi Berl Lazar and President of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia Alexander Boroda.

"I would like to note that this day is given special importance in Russia, because we remember the misfortunes that Nazism brought to our land. More than a million Soviet and Russian Jews fell victim to these crimes," he said.

The President also noted that it is no coincidence that Holocaust Memorial Day coincides with the Day of Commemoration of the Lifting of the Siege of Leningrad. Putin called the siege of Leningrad a crime against humanity, pointing out that the Nazis had set themselves the goal of destroying an entire city.

In addition, he stated that work on preserving eternal values in the country will continue. Boroda, in turn, noted that the ideas of patriotism and love for the Motherland are what the unity of Russia is based on.

Lazar said at a meeting with Putin on January 28 that Jews feel comfortable in Russia and are proud to live in that country. He thanked Putin "for everything he does every day" and noted that he had managed to create a comfortable environment for different cultures to cohabit within Russia.
