Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during a meeting with the coordinators of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (WFP) on the reform of the UN Security Council (SC), stressed the Russian Federation's position in favor of verified transformations of the Security Council. This was announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry on January 28.

"[Sergey] Lavrov emphasized Russia's principled position in favor of well—thought-out transformations of the UN Security Council, which are designed to enhance the authority and effectiveness of this body," the ministry said in a statement on its website.

The Minister also noted that the organization needs to be given a "more democratic character" by increasing the number of representatives from the countries of the Global South and East. At the same time, the participants agreed that there are still "significant differences" on all aspects of the reforms.

Last December, Lavrov said that it was much easier to reform the UN structures than the bureaucracy in Brussels, which was trying to usurp the powers of other governments. He noted that Moscow has long been drawing the attention of colleagues in the leadership of the UN Secretariat to take a closer look at what is happening with the so-called Brussels elite.
