A number of media reports about the US administration's plans to impose a naval blockade of Cuba to stop oil supplies are alarming, such actions would be a new gross violation of international law. This was stated on January 29 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commenting on relevant media publications.

"Such "stuffing" cannot but cause deep concern against the background of the forcible seizure of the current President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, carried out by the United States in violation of international law," Zakharova's response was published on the official website of the Foreign Ministry.

She recalled that Cuba has been under an illegitimate economic, commercial and financial blockade by the United States for almost 70 years, which continues to increase pressure, including the unjustified inclusion of the island in the list of "countries sponsoring terrorism."

"We hope that these publications have no basis in fact. Common sense must prevail. Otherwise, we are talking about an inhumane encroachment on the decent lives of Cuban citizens and provoking a humanitarian crisis," Zakharova said.

The Politico newspaper reported on January 23 that the Trump administration is studying measures to put pressure on the Cuban authorities, including the possibility of imposing a complete naval blockade to stop oil imports into the country. The source of the publication clarified that there is no final decision yet, and proposals can be submitted to the US president as part of a broader package of measures.
