- Rusal talked about the introduction of new environmentally friendly materials for the installation of electrolyzers
During the assembly of the electrolyzers, Rusal introduced unformatted materials developed using its own patented technology, the company's press service said.
The use of such materials simplifies the installation process, in addition, unformatted materials are cheaper than traditional bricks and slabs for the industry and are reusable, the company explained. By the end of 2025, Rusal has implemented unformatted materials at 5,100 electrolyzers at Bratsk, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novokuznetsk and Sayanogorsk aluminum plants, accounting for about 80% of the company's total electrolyzers. The transfer of 5,100 electrolyzers to NFM has already provided savings of 1 billion rubles due to the lower price of unformatted materials and the rapid installation of equipment.
"The Rusal Engineering and Technology Center has developed its own technology for the use of unformatted materials from coal processing products and equipment for sealing MFPs, which made it possible to replace a significant amount of bricks and slabs. The use of MFM has made it possible to reduce the cost of lining materials by 50% and reduce operating costs during installation of electrolyzers by 50%. The innovative technology and our unique equipment are protected by 40 international patents," said Viktor Mann, Technical Director of Rusal.
According to experts, the use of new materials will also make production more environmentally friendly. Now, during the overhaul of electrolyzers, it is possible to recycle and reuse at least 50% of the MFM. The re-involvement of NFMs significantly reduces the amount of waste and contributes to the construction of closed production and a circular economy. Each plant additionally saves millions of rubles on recycling fees alone.
