In the United States, the death toll from a large-scale snowstorm has risen to 51 people, hundreds of thousands of homes remain without electricity, and authorities in dozens of states have declared a state of emergency. The disaster led to the closure of schools, the suspension of flights at a number of airports and mass flight cancellations, affecting about 200 million residents of the country. All the details are in the Izvestia article.

What is known about the victims and consequences of the disaster

NBC News reported that millions of residents from the Great Lakes region to the Gulf coast have been warned of extremely low temperatures, and the eastern part of the country continues to recover from a powerful winter storm. The publication notes that the bad weather has already claimed the lives of at least 51 people.

In Louisiana and Tennessee, eight weather-related deaths were recorded. In Kentucky, a 72-year-old woman died of hypothermia, another inmate died while clearing snow and ice in a correctional facility, and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani reported 10 dead found on the streets of the city.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy snowfalls and dangerous ice are expected in the eastern regions from Texas to North Carolina, with a state of emergency imposed in at least 21 states.

How bad weather paralyzed the power grid and air traffic

The PowerOutage service reported that more than 800,000 residents in 10 states were left without electricity at the height of the storm, with the most difficult situation in Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana.

The disaster seriously affected aviation communications, ABC News reported, more than 11,000 flights were canceled in one day, and all flights were suspended at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington.

"Airlines have canceled all flights at Ronald Reagan Airport," the airport's press service said.

Due to the snowstorm, the New York authorities also decided to close public schools, as a result of which about 500 thousand students in almost 1.1 thousand educational institutions switched to the distance format. Washington authorities have announced an extension of the state of emergency until Wednesday, according to Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Weather forecasts

According to the National Weather Service, heavy snowfall is expected from Texas to North Carolina, the height of the snow cover in some places reaches 40 cm. US President Donald Trump noted that emergency services have been put on high alert. In New York, forecasters predict up to 40 cm of snow, which could be the heaviest snowfall since February 2021.

"What happened to global warming?" asked Trump at a rally in Iowa, commenting on the weather situation.

According to him, global warming has become "one of those things," but he did not specify what exactly he meant.
