South Korea's former First Lady sentenced to 20 months in prison
The court of first instance sentenced the former first lady of South Korea, Kim Gong-hee, to one year and eight months in prison on corruption charges, the meeting was broadcast on January 28 on YTN TV channel.
The woman was charged on three counts, but the court found the defendant innocent on two of them. In particular, the special prosecutor accused Kim Gong-hee of manipulating the value of the car dealer's securities.
The investigation has put forward a version that the ex-first lady allegedly made a profit of 810 million won ($564 thousand) after the fraud. However, on this point, the court found Kim Gong-hee innocent.
The prosecutor's office also charged the former first lady with non—compliance with the rules for financing political campaigns - free opinion polls conducted in the interests of her husband, former South Korean President Yoon Seok-young, before the election. However, the court found no evidence of a violation of the law.
As a result, Kim Gong—hee was found guilty on one count - violation of anti-corruption legislation in connection with receiving expensive gifts. Among them are two handbags and a necklace from the Unification Church worth 80 million won (about $56 thousand). In addition to serving a prison sentence, Kim Gong—hee will have to pay a fine of 12.8 million won ($8.9 thousand). The donated jewelry will be confiscated.
On January 21, the Court of First Instance of the Republic of Korea sentenced former Prime Minister Han Dok-soo to 23 years in prison in the case of the illegal imposition of martial law in 2024. Han Dok-soo was recognized as one of the key participants in the rebellion and accused of assisting the leader of the conspirators, which refers to former President Yoon Seok-yeol.
