Possible US attacks on representatives of the Iranian leadership under the pretext of protecting human rights may become a new and extremely dangerous escalation in the strategy of regime change in Tehran. This was stated on January 27 by Evgeny Zlenko, project manager of the Polylog Group, to Izvestia.

According to him, attempts to achieve a change of power in the Islamic Republic by the United States and Israel have already been made during the 12-day war in 2025, but then they did not bring results and ended in a forced truce. The expert recalled that one of the reasons for the de-escalation was Iran's ability to inflict significant damage on the Israeli side.

"However, the direct involvement of the United States in a military confrontation with Iran this time is fraught with a much more destructive level of escalation. Tehran, having learned from the experience of last year when it attacked the largest American airbase in the Middle East, Al-Udeid, officially warned that it would respond not only to Israel, but also to other American facilities in the Persian Gulf region. The current situation is tense to the limit, because the parties have practically no room for maneuver," Zlenko said.

According to the political scientist, the current situation is characterized by an extremely high level of tension, in which the parties have less and less space for diplomatic maneuvers. In such a situation, Zlenko stressed, the United States risks provoking a large-scale regional conflict with unpredictable consequences.

"Washington risks unleashing a full-scale regional war with unpredictable consequences, because both the United States and Iran are ready for a tough confrontation that could spiral out of control. In such conditions, for all the seeming fantasy, the probability of using even tactical nuclear weapons ceases to be zero," the expert concluded.

On January 26, The New York Times (NYT) newspaper, citing sources, reported that one of the largest and most powerful aircraft carriers of the US Navy, the Abraham Lincoln model, which was stationed in the waters of the Indian Ocean, is ready to attack Iran within one or two days if necessary. It is specified that this aircraft carrier is accompanied by three other warships, which, in turn, are equipped with Tomahawk missiles.
