Israel is seeking to conclude a new 10-year agreement with the United States on military assistance, but is ready to reduce American subsidies. This was reported on January 27 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.

The current 10-year Memorandum of Understanding, under which Israel receives $3.8 billion annually from the United States, of which $500 million is provided for the development and modernization of the Israeli David's Sling and Iron Dome missile systems, expires in 2028.

Gil Pinhas, a recently retired financial adviser to the Israeli Defense Ministry, told the Financial Times that Israel would discuss further development of military projects, including missile systems, at upcoming talks expected in the coming weeks. Tel Aviv wants to achieve joint work on the modernization of such projects on a one-time basis, "and not exclusively within the framework of a 10-year agreement," Pinhas said.

"In this context, partnership is more important than just financial issues <...> There are many things that cost money," Pinhas said.

He also noted that US subsidies of $3.3 billion, which Israel can use to buy American weapons, are "one of the components of the security agreement," and Washington's financial assistance will gradually decrease in the future.

On January 25, US President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff called constructive talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the implementation of a peace plan to end the war in Gaza. According to him, during the negotiations, the states focused on current achievements, as well as on the implementation of the second phase of the gas plan of the American leader Donald Trump.
