- Cherchesov called the ex-coach of the Russian national football team Ignatiev a good mentor
Boris Ignatiev, the former head coach of the Russian national team, was a mentor who always knew what to say. This was announced on January 27 by Stanislav Cherchesov, coach of the Akhmat football club.
"It's like [Ignatiev] hasn't changed. Not in relationships, not in their behavior, not in their relationships with players, colleagues. Football is the most important thing in life. He gave a lot to football <...> He went through all the stages from a young man to the first national team <...> He always knew what to say," Cherchesov said.
Alexander Dyukov, President of the Russian Football Union (RFU), expressed his deep condolences over Ignatiev's death, calling him a bright and kind man and a great loss for the football family.
Dyukov noted that Ignatiev worked honestly for the benefit of Russian sports in various positions, won gold at the 1988 European Youth Championship and led the Russian national team during a difficult period. Dyukov promised to provide all necessary support to the family of the deceased.
Boris Ignatiev's death became known earlier that day. He led the Russian national team from 1996 to 1998. Ignatiev was a member of a number of Soviet clubs, including Gorky Volga, Dynamo Moscow and Makhachkala, and Meteor Zhukovsky.
According to Alexander Mirzoyan, chairman of the RFU Football Veterans Committee, Ignatiev is scheduled to be buried at the Troekurovsky Cemetery in Moscow. He added that Ignatiev was a representative of a galaxy of outstanding coaches and devoted his whole life to football, coaching many teams.
Irina, Boris Ignatiev's widow, said that a possible cause of her husband's death was heart disease and stomach problems. She also noted that the date of the farewell and funeral has not yet been determined, and perhaps the RFU will organize the ceremony.
