According to the publication, ice, freezing rain and snow began to fall on the southern states from Texas to Kansas on January 23, and on January 25 shifted to the east, bringing severe weather conditions from the Carolinas to New York.

It adds that the storm caused massive power outages and created extremely dangerous conditions on the roads. Low temperatures are expected to last for a week, which increases the health risks for people left without electricity or shelter.
