Media reported on the mental health crisis in Israel due to the conflict in Gaza
The armed conflict in the Gaza Strip has provoked a surge in cases of mental disorders among the Israeli military. This was reported on January 27 by Bloomberg.
"Thousands of people in Israel are suffering from post—traumatic stress disorder after the Hamas attack in October 2023 and the subsequent two-year war, which triggered the largest mental health crisis in the country's history," the publication says.
According to experts, the mental health crisis has a negative impact on the Israeli economy. The country's economy is expected to suffer losses of 500 billion shekels ($160 billion) over the next five years. Experts say that even if the current truce holds, the number of victims — survivors of the Hamas attack, rescuers and soldiers involved in the conflict with Gaza — will grow, "leaving an indelible mark on society for many years to come."
According to the coalition of mental health organizations, in Israel, in addition to post-traumatic stress disorder, the level of depression and anxiety has reached "record highs."
The rehabilitation department of the Israeli Ministry of Defense treats 32,000 military personnel with mental health problems and post-traumatic stress disorder, including about 13,000 people over the past two years. According to the ministry's forecasts, by 2028 the total number of patients should increase to 50 thousand.
On January 22, US President Donald Trump announced that the war in the Gaza Strip was coming to an end. According to him, the radical Palestinian movement Hamas will follow the agreements.
On the same day, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, at talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, said that the scale of destruction in the Gaza Strip was catastrophic, it was almost completely destroyed. According to him, thousands of people were injured in the West Bank of the Jordan River.
On January 21, Putin said that during the process of resolving the situation in the Gaza Strip, the main thing is to create conditions for a long-term resolution of the conflict. He also noted the need for the process to take into account the "inherent needs and wishes of the Palestinians."
