The dermatologist spoke about the effect of the cold season on the skin
Winter makeup can harm the skin due to cold, sudden temperature changes and dryness in the rooms. Alexandra Zeynalova, a dermatologist and mycologist at SM-Cosmetology, told about this on January 27.
The expert noted that in cold weather, the sebaceous glands work poorly, and the hydrolipidic barrier of the skin becomes vulnerable. Frost causes capillary constriction, which leads to poor blood circulation, which means that the skin receives less nutrition and oxygen. Moisture from the skin's surface also evaporates quickly, which causes dryness, flaking, tightness, and sometimes redness and hypersensitivity.
"Many foundation creams, especially matte and long-lasting ones, contain substances that work against the skin in winter. These include alcohols and absorbents designed for matting and durability, but in the cold they additionally degrease and dehydrate the skin and destroy the already weakened lipid barrier. In addition, dense, "non—breathing" textures create a film on the surface that can interfere with natural hydration," the doctor explained "Газете.Ru ".
In addition, winter makeup may not match the season: light summer products do not provide adequate protection, and too dense winter creams can tighten the skin. The powder, which usually absorbs excess sebum, absorbs moisture residues on dry winter skin, which enhances the effect of dryness. Frequent use of powder and foundation products can create a "non-breathing" layer that blocks the natural processes of moisturizing and renewing the skin.
Zeynalova warned that regular use of heavy makeup in winter can lead to increased dryness, peeling, irritation and redness of the skin. Rosacea may also worsen, inflammation and other skin problems may appear, as the barrier function is disrupted.
It is specified that in winter it is especially important to monitor the safety of makeup. First of all, hydration and protection are necessary: in the morning, before makeup, apply a nourishing cream with ceramides, hyaluronic acid or oils. For makeup, it is recommended to use foundation products with moisturizing ingredients, such as BB or CC creams, or moisturizing foundation fluids, but it is better to abandon mattifying and resistant textures.
According to the dermatologist, it is better to abandon powder in winter or use it minimally, choosing loose mineral options without talc, applying them only in the T-zone. She also recommended applying a protective cream to the most vulnerable areas of the face before going outside and completing evening care with a gentle cleansing to remove makeup and restore the skin with a night cream.
Elena Ilchuk, cosmetologist, founder and chief physician of ELEVANS clinic, said on January 5 that in winter the skin, even if it is initially in a normal state, becomes drier and more sensitive, as it lacks moisture. Ilchuk recalled that temperature fluctuations also affect the vessels of the face, which narrow in the cold and expand in the heat. This process can cause redness and increased symptoms in people with rosacea, as well as cause inflammation on oily skin.
