- The Interior Ministry told about a new scheme of fraudsters with fake fines from the traffic police
Fraudsters have started using a new scheme based on fake unpaid traffic police fines, in which, under the guise of bailiffs, they ask citizens for an access code to the Gosuslugi portal in order to further commit data theft. This follows from the data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, which was reviewed by TASS on January 27.
It is specified that the attacker contacts the potential victim, posing as an employee of the bailiffs. He informs about the existence of an allegedly unpaid traffic police fine, to which substantial penalties have already been applied. To confirm this information, a verification process is initiated through the Gosuslugi portal. An SMS message is sent to the victim with a code that the fraudster requests to gain access to the account.
After the person gives the code, the call ends. Shortly after that, the victim receives instant messenger calls from individuals posing as "Rosfinmonitoring manager" and "FSB employee." They claim that by providing the code, the person transferred his data to fraudsters.
Further, the false siloviki claim that they have managed to identify the criminals, but in order to apprehend them, it is necessary for the victim to withdraw all his savings and transfer them to a "secure account." The Ministry of Internal Affairs strongly recommends that you do not follow the instructions of unknown persons, regardless of who they are, and never tell them the codes from SMS messages from Gosuslugi, banks or other online services.
On January 25, the Department for combating the illegal use of information and Communication Technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region reported that cases of sending fake messages on behalf of the Gosuslugi portal had become more frequent in Russia. Scammers use similar logos and personal appeals, while citizens are urged not to follow suspicious links and contact only official sources for information and help.
