Rutte declared the end of the era of American trusteeship over the security of the European Union

On January 26, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the end of an era when the United States bore the main burden of ensuring Europe's security.

"The era when we effortlessly relied on the United States for our common security has come to an end," Rutte said during a discussion with MEPs of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs committee.
