Viktor Ulianovich Khomenko, one of the oldest veterans of the Great Patriotic War, died in Canada at the age of 109. This was announced on January 25 at the Russian Embassy in Canada.

"Condolences on the death of Viktor Ulianovich Khomenko, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War and World War II," the embassy's Telegram channel said.

Viktor Khomenko was born on March 28, 1917. Before the start of the war, he graduated from the Leningrad Medical School, and after that he worked as a paramedic in the Arctic for five years, sailed on the icebreaker Ermak and spent two years wintering at polar stations.

From the first days of the Great Patriotic War, Khomenko volunteered to defend his Homeland, participating in the defense of Leningrad as part of the Vyborg Rifle Division of the People's Militia. In 1945, he reached Berlin, showing courage and bravery in battle. For his services, Viktor Khomenko was awarded the medals "For Bravery" (twice), "For Military Merit", "For the Defense of Leningrad" and "For the Victory over Germany".

After the war, he continued his career as a doctor in Leningrad. Since 2002, Khomenko has lived in Toronto, where he has been actively involved in social and educational activities, supporting the memory of the feat of his generation and participating in events for veterans.
