The surgeon explained the futility of liposuction after losing a lot of weight
Patients who have achieved significant weight loss often face disappointment: despite the pounds lost, the body in the mirror does not meet expectations, and it seems that liposuction will be the solution. However, this method is not only ineffective in such cases, but can also worsen the problem. Evgeniya Ilyina, a plastic surgeon at the Semeynaya clinic network, told Izvestia about this on January 27.
As the expert explained, with obesity, the skin is in a state of overgrowth for a long time, which leads to damage to the collagen and elastin fibers responsible for its elasticity.
"After a sharp weight loss, the volume goes away, but the "skeleton" of the skin is no longer able to shrink to a new size. At the same time, fibrosis forms in the subcutaneous layer — dense connective tissue bridges that make the tissues rigid and heterogeneous. As a result, the main problem after losing a lot of weight is not excess fat, but a combination of stretched, thinned skin with fibrously altered subcutaneous tissue," the doctor explained.
Liposuction, according to the surgeon, is an effective method for removing local excess fatty tissue in patients with preserved skin elasticity. However, in a situation after severe weight loss, removing the remaining fat does not improve, and often even emphasizes sagging tissues, since the skin has exhausted its resource for reduction. Hardware and injection techniques also have a limited effect: they can slightly improve the quality and texture of the skin, but they are not able to eliminate excess skin and fibrous deformation.
"The only really working solution after losing a lot of weight is reconstructive surgery aimed at removing excess skin and restoring the natural contours of the body corresponding to the new weight. This is not just an aesthetic "refinement", but a logical continuation of the path to health," said Ilyina.
The surgeon urged patients who had gone through tremendous efforts to approach the final stage consciously, without illusions, and to consider further correction as an act of respect for themselves and their bodies, rather than as a correction of shortcomings.
Earlier, on November 28, Alexandra Fileva, a dermatologist and expert at the Hemotest laboratory, said that the popularity of cosmetic procedures at home is growing, because it is convenient and, most importantly, profitable: at least you do not have to pay for the rent of the premises. However, the apparent savings may conceal serious health risks.
