Most Europeans believe that democracy in their countries is in decline and do not believe that the situation will improve in the future. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on January 26, citing a survey conducted by FGS Global.

A large-scale survey revealed the deeply pessimistic sentiments of European society. The majority of respondents (76%) said that democracy in their country is in decline. Among the respondents, 63% believe that the best years are behind them, while 77% fear that life in their country will be more difficult for the next generation.

It is noted that negative assessments of the European future are especially widespread in Western and Central European countries.

Among the countries whose population believes that they are moving in the wrong direction, the leaders are France (79%), Belgium (74%), Hungary and Slovakia (73%).

"The survey results are bad news for most governments, as they reveal a low level of public confidence in political systems and skepticism about their ability to function effectively," the article says.

The survey was conducted in November 2025 and takes into account the opinions of more than 11,000 people in 23 EU member states. At least 500 people were interviewed in each country. The margin of error is 4.4 percentage points.

The Bild newspaper reported on December 13, citing a study by the INSA institute, that the German population's support for the ruling coalition continues to decline. According to the publication, the government's approval rating currently stands at 38%.
