Indian health authorities are fighting an outbreak of the Nipah virus, which has no vaccine or treatment. At the moment, five cases of the disease have been registered in the country, among which there are medical workers. The mortality rate of the virus ranges from 40 to 75%. In this regard, doctors checked 180 people who had been in contact with the sick, and quarantined 20 of them. All the details are in the Izvestia article.

The danger of the Nipah virus

Nipah virus is a zoonotic infection and can be transmitted to humans from animals such as bats and pigs. Epidemiologist, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Ginzburg noted that there is no cure for the virus, and recovery depends on the state of the human immune system. He also stressed that there are active flights between Russia and India, which creates a risk of the virus being imported.

Professor Alexey Agranovsky added that there are no conditions in Russia for the spread of the Nipah virus, since there are no animal vectors here. He stressed that Nipah viruses are endemic to certain territories, and the situation in the country is different from cases with coronavirus.

Academician Gennady Onishchenko urged Russians to be responsible when planning trips abroad, but do not panic. He noted that regular hand washing and careful processing of products before consumption play an important role in prevention.

Recommendations of Rospotrebnadzor

Rospotrebnadzor is monitoring the situation with the spread of the Nipah virus in India. The ministry noted that at the moment there are no registered cases of this dangerous disease being imported into Russia.

"The situation is under control," the press service of Rospotrebnadzor reported.

The ministry added that Russia has a sufficient supply of test systems for the diagnosis of the Nipah virus. An automated system is in place at border checkpoints to identify people with signs of infectious diseases.
