- U.S. Secretary of State Rubio held a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Iraq.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani had a telephone conversation. This was announced on January 25 by the press service of the State Department.
"The Secretary of State highly appreciated the initiative and leadership of the Government of Iraq in speeding up the transfer and detention of ISIS terrorists (a terrorist group banned in Russia. - Ed.) in the protected centers of Iraq after the recent instability in northeastern Syria," the publication says.
It is noted that during the conversation, the issue of diplomatic efforts to ensure the rapid repatriation of citizens in Iraq was also raised.
Rubio and al-Sudani also discussed the formation of a government in Iraq so that the country could prove itself as a force ensuring "stability, prosperity and security in the Middle East."
On January 15, at the ceremony of presenting credentials to foreign ambassadors, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia opposes external interference in the internal affairs of Lebanon and Iraq. According to him, political relations with both countries have traditionally developed in a positive way.
